As someone who’s been living in Beijing since 2018, one thing I’ve always appreciated is the city’s international food scene. From high-end dining to hidden neighborhood gems, there’s no shortage of global flavors—and Turkish Feast is a standout when it comes to authentic Turkish cuisine.

Their Wangfujing location, which opened in 2024, is located on the 4th floor of WF Central, a modern shopping complex just steps away from some of Beijing’s most iconic landmarks, including the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square.

It’s a convenient and stylish spot for lunch or dinner, whether you’re sightseeing or just exploring downtown.

The menu offers a solid range of Turkish dishes. We started with a classic mezze platter featuring muhammara, yogurt celery, hummus —all fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated.

I’m a huge fan of Turkish dips and bread, and these were the perfect way to start the meal!

For mains, we shared the grape sarma, a giant Ottoman-style lamb with bulgar pilaf, and beef, adana and chicken kebabs.

The pide—a Turkish-style flatbread—was warm, cheesy, and comforting, and the baklava was perfectly crisp with just the right level of sweetness.

And don’t miss out on the cocktails. Their drink menu includes creative options like the Turkish Feast cocktail with gin, Istanbul Night, Shy Raspberry, Irish Ginger, and Turkish Delight—all of which were thoughtfully mixed and well-balanced.

On weekends, the restaurant also features a live saxophone player, which adds to the atmosphere without feeling overly staged. It’s a nice detail that enhances the dining experience.

While this branch is centrally located, Turkish Feast also has other locations across Beijing (listed below), making it easy to enjoy their food whether you’re in Chaoyang, Sanlitun, or elsewhere in the city.

Thank you to Turkish Feast for inviting me to taste your menu at this Wangfujing location! Over the years we have visited Turkish Feast’s other locations on our own many times and always enjoy the food and atmosphere.

Wine Tasting in Beijing’s Secret Underground City https://rachelmeetschina.com/2023/12/03/wine-tasting-in-beijings-secret-underground-city/ https://rachelmeetschina.com/2023/12/03/wine-tasting-in-beijings-secret-underground-city/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2023 06:59:00 +0000 https://rachelmeetschina.com/?p=19095

Did you know there is a network of tunnels under Beijing?  It’s called the Underground City or  Underground Great Wall

Constructed during the 1970s as a defensive measure against Cold War-era threats, the vast network of tunnels was once reserved for confidential military use. In modern times, most parts of these tunnels remain strictly private and off-limits to the public. However, a small section of these tunnels has undergone a fascinating transformation, now serving as an unconventional wine cellar.

Nathan surprised me by signing us up for a wine tasting event – when he told me it was in an underground tunnel section, I was not sure what to expect. I had heard about these tunnels before but never been, so I was also really excited.

We went to an unassuming location in Beijing’s Shuangjing area, and were led down two floors into the tunnel area. Jacqueline, our event host, gave us a tour and explained some of the history of the tunnels.

Off to the left was a room where we would be having our wine tasting. The ambiance is both mysterious and inviting, making it a really unique setting for a distinctive tasting experience.

For this event we were treated to a selection of eight different Spanish wines, carefully curated to offer a diverse and delightful tasting journey. The tasting began with a refreshing champagne and a crisp white wine, then we gradually transitioned to the robust flavors of various reds.

Our host Jacqueline, of “WTF: Wine Tasting with Friends” was very knowledgeable and made the experience really fun. There’s no need to be a wine expert – you just need to enjoy drinking wine!

Accompanying the wine tasting were an array of snacks like chocolate, nuts, crisps, crackers, and Jamon Iberico ham, that enhanced the overall enjoyment of the event (and keeping us from getting too tipsy during the tastings!).

To round out the experience we tried a taste of Pascali Vermouth, a distinctive and aromatic finale to the underground wine journey.

In a city known for its rich history and vibrant culture, the wine tasting in Beijing’s Underground City stands out as a testament to the city’s ability to blend the old with the new, turning Cold War relics into spaces for contemporary enjoyment. For those fortunate enough to attend, it was an enjoyable evening set against the backdrop of Beijing’s hidden tunnels!

My monthly recaps give you a slice of expat life in Beijing, covering everything from historical hutong cafes, traditional Beijing sites, and delicious Chinese cuisines, to downtown rooftop bars, international restaurants, expat activities, and more.

Beijing is an ever-growing and changing city, a fusion of ancient traditions and international cultures – which means expat life here is never boring! This is of course not a comprehensive list of everything in the city, but a fun way to look back and share what I’ve done in the month.

  1. 1. Fu San Coffee Shop
  2. 2. Yinshan Pagoda Forest
  3. 3. oh! By FINE cafe
  4. 4. Casa Damian Lounge / Wild Kats Beijing Parties
  5. 5. QMEX Summer Menu
  6. 6. China’s Internet Famous Bamboo Milk Tea
  7. 7. BARBIE The Movie in China
  8. 8. Beijing Live Comedy Game Show: “Would I Lie To You?”
  9. Business Collaboration Requests

As always, make sure to follow me on Instagram and WeChat channels for more videos and updates on life in China.

So without further ado, here are 8 Beijing eat, drinks, and activities I tried in July 2023!

1. Fu San Coffee Shop

I can’t believe I’ve been living in Beijing for 5 years and didn’t know about Fu San. There are actually three branches of this coffee shop, but their Hutong location south of the Forbidden City Xixinglong Street is the one I really wanted to see. Blue is my favorite color and this cafe had no shortage of it! They also had a selection of really unique cakes shaped like rabbits, apricots, and mountains. Sticking with the blue theme, I wanted to try the blue mountain cake (It tasted like oranges inside!)  It was a hot summer day and I had the roof to myself!

Address: fu3福叁咖啡(西兴隆街店) 西兴隆街130号

2. Yinshan Pagoda Forest

An incredible scenic area in Beijing’s Changping District with ancient pagodas and a beautiful mountain hike! Perfect for a day trip outside Beijing. Read more about it here: Beijing Yinshan Pagoda Forest Scenic Area | Unique Beijing Day Trip.

3. oh! By FINE cafe

Two words: Souffle. Pancakes. That’s it.

This is a cute little cafe by the Drum Tower. It’s great for a chill brunch if you’re around the hutongs and Houhai Lake. It does get quite busy on the weekends though, so you might have to get a number and wait for a table.

4. Casa Damian Lounge / Wild Kats Beijing Parties

Beijing’s music scene is POPPING this summer, and a new rooftop party group is on the scene. Wild Kats is founded by two foreign DJs who have each lived in China 14+ years. They reached out to me on IG and invited me to their HOUSE ON THE ROOF party held at Casa Damian. It was INCREDIBLE. The rooftop, the atmosphere, the music, the people…it’s the rooftop party that Beijing needs (especially with Nali Patio closing this month).

5. QMEX Summer Menu

This Mexican Fondue burger on Q Mex’s new summer menu was INCREDIBLE. Is it a heart attack waiting to happen? Maybe. But is it worth it? Absolutely.

If you aren’t familiar with it, Q MEX is a expat favorite Mexican restaurant in Beijing, with many locations around the city. With lots of taco, burrito, and other options, it’s good when you’re craving Mexican food and tasty cocktails.

6. China’s Internet Famous Bamboo Milk Tea

Earlier this year in 2023, a trendy new milk tea came onto the scene at tourist spots all over China: the Bamboo Milk Tea, or Zhu Tong Nai Cha 竹筒奶茶. Scenic sites all over China began offering it, and it exploded online. It became trendy because of its bamboo cup that is customized for the city you buy it in.

7. BARBIE The Movie in China

While of course this is not a unique China movie, it’s been fun to see how the movie has been getting a lot of buzz on social media in China!.

8. Beijing Live Comedy Game Show: “Would I Lie To You?”

On July 29th, Date Night China and The Comedy Citadel joined forces to present a Beijing edition of the live comedy game show “Would I Lie to You?” at Li-Pi Records in Beijing’s 798 Art District. It was an epic night of lies and truths. and so much fun!

As some of you may know, Nathan and I founded Date Night China in 2019, and have been hosting events in Beijing since 2020. We’ve had fun collaborating with The Comedy Citadel recently, and will plan some other fun live event shows together in the future.

Follow both Date Night China and Comedy Citadel. on Instagram and WeChat for more information on future events.

Business Collaboration Requests
